In August 1865, Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee wrote to his former slave – Jourdan Anderson – to request that he come back to work for him on his Tennessee farm. Jourdan – now emancipated – had moved to Ohio and found a better post-slavery life. The below is his response to Colonel Anderson. It is very well stated, moving letter – basically asking why in the world would he possibly want to return to work for Mr. Anderson.

Please read this touching letter all the way to the end. It tells the story of one individual’s success during a very bleak time in American history.

This amusing commercial was created to plug a dating advice book called 11 Points Guide to Hooking Up. Having read the book, I can assure you that it’s not only hilarious but also filled with practical advice. The commercial was filmed in Virginia, which is also where the film Lincoln is currently being shot by Steven Spielberg. The director and his crew chose to film it in a central-Virginia restaurant and bar named Shackleford’s.  Is this commercial perhaps the greatest one about hooking up ever created? I think so. But you’ll probably never see it on TV. The creators don’t have the budget for that. Nonetheless, I would argue that its certainly as well-made as any commercial you’d find on the living room tube.

Kina Grannis is a pop/rock signer and songwriter. Kina began exploring music as a youngster in Mission Viejo, California by singing in front of her toys and with her sisters. She discovered her aunt’s guitar at the age of 15 and had to have her own the following year, when her songwriting efforts really started to blossom.

Kina’s songwriting and musical interests followed her to the University of Southern California, where she was selected by the Thornton School of Music to produce a six song EP in her Sophomore year. The EP – Sincerely, me. – was then released in 2005. And, two years later, she recorded a song for Rachael Lawrence and Deborah Ellen that was featured in several episodes of the TV show General Hospital.

Upon her graduation from USC, Grannis moved to Austin, Texas to sing and record music with a band – where she began uploading her performances to YouTube. These efforts paid off, with Kina winning a Superbowl contest in 2008. She then signed a contract with Interscope Records, but shortly thereafter decided to return to indie status and without releasing anything on the record label. Kina Grannis then went on to record a self-released full-length albun, Stairwells, in February 2010 which cracked the Billboard 200.

A lawyer recently married a woman who had previously divorced ten husbands.
